On his appointment, Kenneth Montgomery said, "I'm honoured, thrilled and flattered to become the Principal Conductor of one of my favourite orchestras. I have worked with the Ulster Orchestra since its foundation. The musicians are very close artistic colleagues. We seem to speak the same musical language. I am full of admiration for their high standards, flexibility and dedication. The Orchestra's repertoire is broad and varied and the programme planning innovative. The last year as Principal Guest Conductor has been exciting and very pleasurable. Our audiences are warmly receptive. It's great to be home!"
